New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell Resigns Following Ethics Probe
Governor Mikie Sherrill cited 'serious, repeated violations of state policy, including ethical lapses and a substantiated finding of sexual harassment' in demanding his departure.
New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell resigned Friday after an investigation uncovered "serious, repeated violations of state policy, including ethical lapses and a substantiated finding of sexual harassment," according to Gov. Mikie Sherrill.
Sherrill released the findings of the investigation Thursday, which prompted her to demand Caldwell's resignation. The report indicated credible evidence that Caldwell made a romantic advance toward a friend of a female staffer. When the advance was rebuffed, Caldwell allegedly made sexually inappropriate comments to the staffer about their friend.
"I hold everyone in my Administration to the highest ethical standard. We all have a duty to follow our state ethics and harassment policy and our Code of Conduct. Anyone who violates these will be held accountable," Sherrill stated Thursday, giving Caldwell one day to step down.
Caldwell has not yet issued a public comment regarding his resignation.
