New Free Repair Shop to Launch in Oxford
The Jericho Repair Shop aims to reduce waste by offering free repairs for a variety of items.
A new initiative aimed at reducing waste is set to launch in Oxford, offering free repairs for a range of items including bikes, electrical goods, computers, and clothing. The first Jericho Repair Shop will be held on Saturday at St Barnabas CE Primary School in the Jericho neighborhood, running from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. BST.
John Mair, the organizer, expressed hope that the event will become a monthly occurrence, stating that such an initiative "stops people throwing things away." Mair was inspired to start the repair shop after utilizing a similar service himself in Wolvercote, where his garden blower was repaired. He has since recruited individuals with expertise in bicycle repair, sewing, computer troubleshooting, and knife sharpening to assist at the Jericho event.
Ben Tuppen, coordinator for Share Oxford, an organization that also operates repair cafes in Oxford, has previously emphasized the societal need for more sustainable practices. Mair echoed this sentiment, urging people to "repair it, don't throw it away and certainly don't throw it on the pavement."
Donations received at the repair shop will contribute to covering rental costs and advertising for future events. Organizers are hopeful that the initiative will generate enough interest to support its continuation on a monthly basis.
