New Footage Emerges of K2 Porter's Final Moments
Newly released video shows the discovery of a struggling porter on K2, a climber's team ultimately leaving him behind.

Newly released footage captures the moment a Norwegian mountaineer and her team discovered Muhammad Hassan, a 27-year-old porter, hanging upside down and struggling on K2 in Pakistan. The climbers, who were on a record-breaking ascent in July 2023, encountered Hassan about 2,000 feet from the summit during the night.
Harrowing video from the documentary "Savage Mountain" shows Hassan, a father of three, caught by a rope. Kristin Harila, 40, who was part of the expedition, stated in the film that they saw "something wrong with the rope around his legs. He was naked on his stomach and his back." Harila and her team attempted to save Hassan, facing dangerous conditions. The group managed to secure him with a new rope.
The documentary's cameraman, Gabriel Tarso, described Hassan as "completely frozen" and noted he lacked oxygen, gloves, and a down suit. Tarso attempted to warm Hassan and provide comfort. At approximately 3:20 a.m., an avalanche struck a section of the mountain, prompting Harila and her guide, Tenjen Sherpa, to continue their ascent. Tarso remained with Hassan, providing an oxygen bottle, until another team member instructed him to leave, stating Hassan was beyond saving.
Hassan's body was recovered approximately three days later. Following the incident, Harila faced death threats after viral video showed members of her team climbing over Hassan's body. In a prior statement to The Telegraph, Harila defended her team's actions, asserting they did all they could to help, including an hour and a half of attempting to lift him and Tarso staying with him for an additional hour.
K2, the second-highest mountain in the world, is known for its treacherous conditions. Hassan's death occurred during a period of intense climbing activity on the mountain, where Harila and Sherpa were working to set a new record for ascending the world's 14 highest peaks.
