Jewish activist Hen Mazzig is featured in a new short documentary titled "Uninvited," which examines the personal toll of public advocacy amidst rising antisemitism. The film chronicles Mazzig, an Israeli-born advocate whose posts have garnered support from public figures, and his husband, Marc Jorden, as they prepare for their wedding.
The documentary follows the couple as they navigate challenges related to acceptance and community in the period following October 7. A synopsis indicates they confront profound questions about resilience in the aftermath of this event.
In one segment of the film, Mazzig and Jorden compile their wedding guest list and reflect on relationships that have been strained or lost due to Mazzig's public stance on antisemitism and related issues. "Making ‘Uninvited’ meant allowing people into one of the most vulnerable parts of my life," Mazzig told Page Six. "I have lost friends and loved ones because of my identity and my public advocacy, but seeing that loss extend to Marc was devastating."
Mazzig described the grief of losing loved ones over his identity or his husband's association with his advocacy as an unexpected burden. He offered encouragement to others facing similar situations, stating, "The people who stay, and the ones who show up when you least expect it, become your chosen family. They’re the reminder that you’re not alone. Don’t shrink yourself to keep anyone else comfortable."
Mazzig has cultivated a significant following through his outspoken opposition to antisemitism and his engagement with the complexities of the Israel-Hamas war. He has been described as a mediator for public figures seeking to understand the conflict's nuances. While a proponent of Israel, Mazzig has also affirmed the right to self-determination for Palestinians.
According to Mazzig, his advocacy is driven by a commitment to peace. He has previously stated that he was told to be ashamed of various aspects of his identity, including his progressive views, his pro-Israel stance, and his support for Palestine. "I think that is what prepared me to deal with this time where a lot of people are very angry, and there’s a lot of hate, and there’s a lot of shame," he said. "But I know how to be confident in standing up for what’s right without compromising my values."
"Uninvited" is directed by Maya Schulefand and was produced by Mazzig Media in collaboration with Boo Productions.
