Apple TV+'s "Silo" is deepening its narrative in Season 3 by significantly expanding its focus to the "Before Times," introducing a new cast of characters integral to understanding the show's pre-apocalyptic origins. Creator Graham Yost is weaving together parallel storylines, exploring both the present-day silo and the world that existed before its construction.
Season 3 elevates Ashley Zuckerman as Congressman Daniel Keene and Jessica Henwick as journalist Helen Drew to series regulars. Viewers first encountered these characters in the final moments of Season 2, which flashed back to pre-apocalyptic Washington, D.C. Daniel Keene, a freshman congressman from Georgia, holds a Masters in Engineering from the University of Georgia and has a background in the Army Corps of Engineers. His interaction with Helen Drew, who was investigating a potential "dirty bomb" and plans to retaliate against Iran, was marked by his gifting her a Pez dispenser—a relic that later appeared in the silo.
Zuckerman, an Australian actor with numerous film and television credits including "Succession" and "Designated Survivor," brings his extensive experience to the role. Henwick, a British actor, writer, and director, boasts a resume that includes "Game of Thrones," "Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens," and "Glass Onion."
New Characters and Connections
The "Before Times" timeline also introduces Charlotte Keene, played by Jessica Brown Findlay. Charlotte, Daniel's sister and a Naval aviator attached to the Nimitz, is a crucial new figure. Though her plane crashes in the first episode of Season 3, she survives, only to lose her memory, mirroring aspects of Juliette Nichols' story. Findlay, known for her role in "Downton Abbey," joins the ensemble cast.
Senator Thurman, portrayed by Laura Innes, emerges as another key player in the "Before Times" narrative. In the Season 3 premiere, Daniel seeks to join her Iran Committee. Senator Thurman and her daughter, Anna (Morven Christie), are central to the "Before Times" storyline, with Anna serving as the family's writer and providing Daniel with information regarding his sister's involvement in the Iran Operation. Innes is recognized for her long-running role on "ER," while Christie has appeared in "The Bay" and "Grantchester."
Further adding to the "Before Times" cast are Reed Birney and Matt Craven, whose roles are being kept under wraps but are confirmed to be significant within that timeline. Birney, a Tony Award-winning actor, has a notable career in theater and television, including "House of Cards." Craven, a Canadian actor, has an extensive filmography, including "Crimson Tide" and "A Few Good Men."
Colin Hanks is set to play Per Stensen, a billionaire from the "Before Times" who crosses paths with Helen and Daniel. Hanks, son of Tom Hanks, has an extensive acting career spanning numerous film and television projects, including "Fargo" and "The Offer."
These new characters and the deeper dive into the "Before Times" are expected to answer fundamental questions about the silo's origins and purpose, enriching the series' complex narrative.
