Marella Cruises has launched a new seven-night 'Tropical Isles' itinerary that ventures beyond typical Caribbean tourist spots, offering passengers a blend of cultural immersion and natural exploration. The round-trip voyage from the Dominican Republic's La Romana includes stops in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, with a notable emphasis on the lesser-visited city of Ponce.

Ponce, situated on Puerto Rico's southern coast, is described as a destination "still in discovery." Local guide Melina noted that while cruise ship visits were minimal a decade ago, the number has increased to four to six annually, signaling its emergence into the spotlight. The city's charm is enhanced by its Art Deco architecture and vibrant street life, reminiscent of Havana and Miami's South Beach.

The itinerary diverges from conventional Caribbean cruises, which often focus solely on beaches and colonial capitals. Marella's 'Tropical Isles' sailing incorporates opportunities to engage with the region's natural environments. On St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, passengers can kayak through the Salt River Ecological Preserve, a sanctuary for wildlife including iguanas, egrets, blue herons, and potentially lemon sharks.

Further exploration in Puerto Rico includes excursions into El Yunque National Park, a rainforest teeming with diverse flora such as giant ferns, Sierra Palms, and Bay Rum shrubs. The sounds of the endemic coqui tree frog echo through the park's trails. On St. Thomas, snorkeling with sea turtles offers a close encounter with marine life. Derek, a local guide, advises a passive approach, noting that the turtles often approach swimmers.

Sarah particularly enjoys the opportunity to see the 'unadulterated nature' of this part of the world while cruising through the Caribbean

In addition to its focus on nature and culture, the cruise includes a stop at Isla Catalina, a small, uninhabited island off the coast of the Dominican Republic. This island offers pristine beaches and underwater life, ideal for snorkeling. The voyage is aboard the Marella Discovery, a 1,830-passenger ship offering a balance of onboard amenities and international dining options.

The new 'Tropical Isles' sailing is the first time Marella have showcased Ponce, in Puerto Rico

The 'Tropical Isles' sailing is available as a seven-night, all-inclusive package starting from £1,233 per person, including flights, luggage, and transfers.
