New Build Transformed into Cozy Retreat Wins Britain's Best Home Award

The uFurnish.com Home Awards have recognized a £250,000 new-build property in Somerset, transformed by homeowner Jade Fish into a cozy countryside retreat, as the winner of its Britain's Best Home award. Fish, a mother of two working in Police HR, was an unexpected finalist who ultimately took home the grand prize, besting four other properties.

The annual awards, now in its third year, saw 1,400 entries narrowed down to 90 finalists. The judging panel included interiors journalist Barbara Chandler, TV presenter Max McMurdo, and Interior Design Masters designer Nicki Bamford-Bowes. Deirdre McGettrick, CEO and founder of uFurnish.com, an AI-powered furniture search site, noted that the awards celebrate "real homes and the people who make them." She added, "this year’s winners show what you can do with a bit of vision, a lot of graft and, in one case, a £100 worktop paint kit."

Several other notable renovations were also honored:

Best Bathroom: Nick Toteda and his partner Ant created a bathroom resembling a living room in their London home, incorporating curtains as a shower screen and tiling floor-to-ceiling. They transformed their four-bedroom Victorian house, which had stood empty for approximately ten years, into their living space.

Best Bedroom: Emily Murray in London converted the top floor of her Edwardian house into a bedroom suite for herself, featuring a sitting area, terrace, wet room, and a distinct pink-hued bath.

Best Before and After Transformation: Emily Barratt of Lancashire tackled her "bathroom of doom," a single bathroom in her seven-bedroom house. After experiencing delays with tradespeople, she took over tiling the floor and walls herself.

Best DIY Creation: Ben Irurzun, a former contestant on Interior Design Masters, built an antique-style apothecary cabinet for his kitchen using 84 IKEA drawers, costing £400 and saving approximately £3,000 compared to a commercial equivalent.

Best Entertaining Space: Kerry Davison in Newcastle designed her garden for parties. Her father, a retired engineer, assisted with rewiring for a hot tub, new drains, and internal paneling.

Best First Impressions: Suzy Broome in South Yorkshire created a striking entrance with a bright orange front door and a custom-tiled path.

Best Hallway: Lara Bezzina in Northamptonshire renovated her partly Georgian house, spending weeks laying a diamond-pattern marble floor in the hallway with her partner and adding gold leaf to the ceiling rose.

Best Home Office: Tamzin McGillen in Bristol converted a garage into a colorful home office, divided into two distinct aesthetic zones.

Best Interior Content Creator: Maxine Austin in Cambridge was recognized for documenting her renovation of a 1970s house with four young children on Instagram, focusing on practical DIY and durable materials.

Best Kitchen: Peter Irvine in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, featured a kitchen with wooden cupboards, whitewashed walls, and a stone sink, centered around a large wooden table.

Best Living Room: Natasha Landers in London experimented with color blocking on her ceiling, cornicing, and shutters.

Best Nursery or Children's Room: Lisa Weaver in Hertford created an underwater-themed bedroom for her son, incorporating dark jade green tracks against an aqua ceiling and custom sea-creature covers for his electric headboard.

Best on a Budget: NHS psychiatrist Orima Kamalu and her husband, a GP, renovated their kitchen for £590 after receiving a £60,000 quote. They utilized YouTube tutorials to fit new doors, paint units, and repaint the worktops.

Best Seasonal Styling: Pandora Maxton, who styles herself as 'Mrs Christmas,' was recognized for her home's seasonal decorations throughout the year.

Best Use of Colour: Laura Hall in Merseyside plans each room around color to set the mood and highlight architectural details.

Overall Public Vote: Astrid Dolan in London won the public vote for her work on her two daughters' bedrooms, undertaken after the sudden death of her husband.

Furniture Village received the award for Best Furniture Retailer. The winner of the Best Garden category requested to remain anonymous.
