New Baby Bank Offers Essential Supplies to Families in Need

A new baby bank has opened in Newent, Gloucestershire, offering a wide range of essential items for babies and young children free of charge to families in need. The Forest of Dean Baby Bank, operating from The Ark Cafe, provides items such as baby wipes, breast pumps, clothing, and swimwear. Larger items like cots can also be sourced from a separate warehouse.

Helen Carter, the lead volunteer, emphasized that the service is "open to everybody" and will not involve any means testing. Parents can often find newly donated items or pick up items that no longer fit their children.

"It's always expensive to buy new baby things and food and nappies and wipes," said Kylie, a local mother visiting the bank. "So to have the support locally is wonderful."

The facility relies heavily on donations, for which the volunteer team expresses gratitude. Currently, there is a high demand for autumn clothing bundles, and volunteers are already preparing Christmas boxes containing festive clothing, blankets, and shoes.

Carter noted that the bank can help families who may not realize they are struggling financially. "A lot of people say, 'I don't need it, I'm okay', but then a lot of people are just sort of managing their finances and are unable to have a nice day out with their children," she explained. "But if they [visit the baby bank], then they would be able to pay for that day out, so they might not think they're struggling, but it helps."

Recent data from The National Childbirth Trust's Parent Experience Report indicates that nearly half of parents reported increased financial struggles after having a baby. This figure rises to approximately six in ten among parents who are self-employed, unemployed, or working part-time.

Kylie, who has an older child, mentioned that while she has hand-me-downs, the cost of new supplies remains significant. "I'm quite lucky, I do have an older child as well, so I've got a lot of hand-me-downs," she said. "But for everyone who hasn't got an older child and [do] formula feeding and things like that, it is very expensive to keep them clean and fed."

Volunteer Isabel shared her motivation for contributing, having previously received help from the center with food parcels and clothing. "I know from having three small children that there is a massive need in the area, so I think this is a great thing that we're doing here," she said. "I just wish more people knew about it."

The Newent baby bank is open every Tuesday morning between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
