Gary Neville, alongside podcast co-hosts Roy Keane and Ian Wright, has weighed in on the potential return of several England stars to the national squad following the World Cup. The panel discussed the implications of manager Thomas Tuchel's decisions and the impact of players left out of the 26-man group named in May for the tournament held in the United States.

Neville questioned the ease with which the squad dynamic might shift for the upcoming September international break, when England is scheduled to face Spain, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. He raised concerns about whether players like Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Phil Foden, who were initially omitted, would seamlessly reintegrate if selected.

Roy Keane suggested that the initial honeymoon period for the squad is over, and lingering questions about the World Cup and the manager's choices could create tension. He pondered if the previously excluded players, such as Harry Maguire and Palmer, would be brought back into the fold.

Ian Wright emphasized that players who begin the season strongly should be considered for selection, stating they "have got to be a bit vexed" about their initial omission. He stressed that the manager's role is to re-engage these players and foster a desire to represent their country.

Neville specifically addressed the omission of Harry Maguire, whom he considered a potentially surprising exclusion. Neville described an "awkward conversation" he had with Tuchel upon learning of Maguire's exclusion. He argued that the team lacked leadership in central defense during the tournament and that Maguire might have provided that necessary presence, even if he wouldn't have dramatically altered offensive play. "Maybe he wouldn't have won that header that went over the top of John Stones. Maybe he wouldn't have got them five yards up the pitch. But he was more likely to have probably won that header and got them five yards up the pitch than probably the others," Neville stated.

Keane offered a lighthearted remark regarding Maguire's recent pre-season performance, asking about his defensive positioning. Maguire has already featured for Manchester United in pre-season matches, even captaining the team in a match against Wrexham.

In contrast to the debate over excluded players, Jude Bellingham was highlighted as an indispensable member of the squad. Neville posited that without Bellingham, who was England's top scorer with seven goals during the tournament, the team "could have literally sank and tanked," comparing his importance to that of Erling Haaland for Norway.
