A 79-year-old man from Nevada died on a popular trail in Sequoia National Park on Thursday after experiencing a medical emergency. Officials identified the deceased as John Francis Oliver.

The incident occurred along the General Sherman Tree Trail, a one-mile path leading to the General Sherman Tree, recognized as the world's largest living tree. First responders were dispatched to the scene and provided emergency medical treatment to Oliver. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead within the park, according to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office.

Rebecca Roland, a spokesperson for the National Parks Service, stated that further details are being withheld out of respect for the family. The National Weather Service had issued an extreme heat advisory on the day of the incident, though it remains unknown if high temperatures contributed to Oliver's death.

This is the second fatality in Sequoia National Park in the past month. In June, 17-year-old Andrea Diaz Mondragon drowned after slipping into a river and being caught by the current while visiting the park with friends. Her family described her as outgoing, strong, brave, and caring, with dreams of becoming a nurse. She also enjoyed dancing and spending time with loved ones.
