A 79-year-old man from Henderson, Nevada, died on Thursday after experiencing a medical emergency while hiking on the General Sherman Tree Trail in California's Sequoia National Park.
Park officials have identified the deceased as John Francis Oliver. First responders provided emergency medical aid at the scene, but Oliver was pronounced dead within the park, according to local news reports citing the Tulare County Sheriff's Office and the National Park Service (NPS).
The General Sherman Tree Trail is a one-mile path leading to the General Sherman Tree, recognized as the world's largest living tree by volume. The Tulare County Sheriff's Office has not released further details regarding the circumstances or cause of Oliver's death out of respect for his family.
The incident occurred as temperatures in the area reached the upper 90s. An extreme heat warning was also in effect for nearby desert regions on Thursday.
This recent death is among several fatalities at Sequoia National Park and adjacent areas in recent months. In June, a teenage girl died after falling into a river within the park. In May, a couple drowned at Roaring River Falls in neighboring Kings Canyon National Park. Last summer, a missing hiker was also found deceased in Sequoia National Park.
