Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has declared a state of emergency in Washoe County as the Hawk Fire rapidly expands, consuming over 10,500 acres north of Reno.
As of Saturday evening, the fire had grown to 10,523 acres, according to the mapping platform Perimeter Map. Reno Police have directed residents to Perimeter Map for the latest evacuation information.
Richard Edwards, chief of Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue in Washoe County, described the fire as a "very dynamic incident" driven by strong winds. "The wind-driven fires move very rapidly into our residential areas, creating a lot of challenges for our firefighters to save homes and protect lives," Edwards said in a social media video.
