Network Rail has filed a legal claim for over £5 million against two rail companies, DB Cargo UK and Touax Rail, in connection with a train derailment and subsequent fuel spill that occurred in August 2020 near Llangennech, Carmarthenshire. The incident led to a blaze and the evacuation of approximately 300 people, with a substantial amount of fuel spilling into surrounding wetlands.

Derailment Details and Environmental Impact

The derailment involved 10 wagons from a 25-wagon train, resulting in the spillage of 446,000 liters of fuel. Of this, 116,000 liters ignited, while 330,000 liters drained into nearby wetlands. These wetlands are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation, raising concerns about potential environmental disaster.

Investigation Findings

According to documents filed in the High Court, Network Rail alleges that the derailment was caused by a wagon that had "not been maintained with reasonable care." The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) concluded in January 2022 that the incident was likely due to a defect in a set of wheels on one of the wagons, stemming from "inadequate maintenance practices." Network Rail, responsible for the operation and maintenance of Britain's railways, is seeking damages for negligence.

While no injuries were reported from the incident, the significant fuel spill and subsequent fire necessitated a substantial response and cleanup effort. The legal action highlights the financial and environmental ramifications of such accidents within the rail network.
