The Brooklyn Nets are planning a "Swamp Dragons Night" on January 29, 2027, when they host the Los Angeles Clippers. The event will commemorate a peculiar chapter in the franchise's history: a potential rebrand to the "Swamp Dragons" that was ultimately abandoned.
The team's press release described the "Swamp Dragons" as "one of the most memorable 'what ifs' in basketball history," and the night is part of the Nets' 60th-season celebrations. Fans can expect themed merchandise, including a bobblehead.
The name "Swamp Dragons" emerged in the early 1990s when the team, then playing in New Jersey, considered a name change to attract more fans. According to former Nets president Jon Spoelstra, the name was a finalist for an expansion franchise in Toronto. Spoelstra told ESPN in 2016 that the "Dragons" part of the name was favored, and the "Swamp" element was added to honor the team's home in the Meadowlands.
"Every time I look out the window here, I see this swamp. And every time I think of swamps, I think of swamp rats. What about that?" Spoelstra recalled discussing the name with then-vice president Jim Lampariello. Lampariello then suggested, "What about Swamp Dragons? I loved it. Dragons are mythical, and fun."
However, the proposed name change faced an obstacle in then-NBA commissioner David Stern. Stern reportedly called the idea "the stupidest f—ing idea I've ever heard." He indicated that the name could proceed only if all seven of the team's owners agreed. The NBA also invested approximately $500,000 to protect the potential name and associated branding.
The envisioned logo featured a teal, purple, and black dragon with a basketball, breathing red fire, a design that aligned with other contemporary sports logos.
Despite initial owner enthusiasm, the name faced opposition, including a call from then-Gov. Christine Whitman's office, which reportedly disliked the use of the word "swamp."
Ultimately, the name change required a supermajority vote from the league's 27 owners. While 26 owners reportedly approved the change, one vote against it came from Nets co-owner David Gerstein. Spoelstra recounted that if the team itself votes no, the name change could not proceed.
Gerstein later reflected to ESPN in 2016 that not moving forward with the "Swamp Dragons" name was the correct decision, stating, "The name just wasn't right." The Nets eventually updated their logo in 1997 and have since relocated to Brooklyn and undergone further branding changes.
