Nets Fall to Celtics in Overtime on Tatum Buzzer-Beater

The Brooklyn Nets suffered a narrow 125-124 overtime defeat against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night, succumbing to a Jayson Tatum jumper as time expired.

The overtime loss came despite a significantly improved performance from the Nets, who had struggled in their previous outing. Rookie Mikel Brown Jr. played a crucial role in forcing overtime, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter, including a game-tying three-pointer with just three-tenths of a second remaining in regulation. However, Brown missed two crucial layups in the overtime period, the latter of which directly led to Tatum's game-winning shot.

Julius Randle contributed 12 points in the fourth quarter comeback and scored the first two baskets of overtime to give the Nets a 121-117 lead. Randle finished with 24 points before fouling out, while Michael Porter Jr. added 27 points. On the Celtics side, Tatum led all scorers with 40 points, complemented by eight assists and five rebounds. He also set a career-high by making 18 of 22 free throws.

Brooklyn held a slim 124-123 lead in overtime when Brown missed a layup. While an initial foul call on Day’Ron Sharpe for a loose ball was overturned to a foul on Luka Garza after a Nets challenge, the sequence ultimately allowed Boston to regain possession. Brown's subsequent missed layup with the shot clock off gave the Celtics the final opportunity.

Missing Noah Clowney's size on the final possession proved detrimental, as Tatum exploited a mismatch against Keon Ellis to secure the victory. Egor Dëmin left the game in the first half with a right leg contusion after appearing to knock legs with Paul George. He did not return and was later ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Prior to the late-game struggles, the Nets demonstrated one of their best all-around efforts of the young season. They led 61-56 at halftime and forced 10 turnovers in the first half, holding the Celtics to just 2-of-16 shooting from three-point range. Despite briefly falling behind in the third quarter after an 11-2 Celtics run, Brooklyn fought back, with Randle putting them up 109-104 with three minutes left in regulation. However, a subsequent 10-2 run by Boston, capped by a Tatum and-one, put the Celtics ahead 114-111. After a missed Porter three-pointer and a Nets offensive rebound, Randle lost the ball, leading to a missed corner three attempt by Chaney Johnson.

In overtime, Mitchell Robinson missed two free throws with three seconds remaining, which could have extended the Nets' lead to five. This miss provided the opportunity for Brown's game-tying three-pointer to force the eventual overtime period.
