Nets Conclude Preseason with Defensive Struggles in Loss to Heat
The Nets dropped their preseason finale to the Miami Heat, highlighting defensive deficiencies that coach Jordi Fernández deemed "unacceptable."
The Brooklyn Nets concluded their preseason schedule with a 144-128 loss to the Miami Heat, a defeat that exposed significant defensive shortcomings. Coach Jordi Fernández emphasized that while preseason games are not about the final score, the team's performance, particularly on defense, was not up to par.
"It was a very poor defensive game," Fernández stated after the game. "It’s the second time that we’ve given up in one half 70 points — 69 in the first half, 75 in the second. That’s unacceptable. And if we want to be a competitive team, we have to play better defense than that."
The Nets, who finished the preseason with a 3-1 record, struggled to contain the Heat in the paint, allowing their opponents to shoot 31-for-40 and outscoring them 62-38 in that area. This lack of interior defense was exacerbated by early foul trouble for Nets center Day’Ron Sharpe, which allowed Heat star Giannis Antetokounmpo to dominate.
Antetokounmpo finished with 20 points, 15 rebounds, nine assists, and three blocks in just 23 minutes, significantly impacting the game and contributing to a double-digit lead for Miami. The Nets were unable to effectively defend him in transition, leading to a deficit they could not overcome.
Despite the defensive issues, there were some positive individual performances for the Nets. Michael Porter Jr. led the team with 27 points, including four three-pointers. Several younger players also showed promise: rookie Mikel Brown Jr. scored 15 points in his preseason debut, while sophomores Egor Dëmin contributed 17 points and Nolan Traore added 12 points and five assists.
However, the struggles of veteran players like All-Star Julius Randle, who finished with a game-worst minus-19, and Moritz Wagner were also noted. Porter's lone rebound was also flagged as insufficient.
The Nets' inability to protect the rim and defend the paint was a recurring theme throughout the game. The team allowed the Heat to score freely near the basket, a vulnerability that Fernández identified as a primary concern heading into the regular season.
"The problem was just defense," Fernández reiterated. "I mean, it was a very poor defensive game."
Davion Mitchell required six stitches after an incident involving Sharpe's knee in the third quarter, adding a minor injury concern to the night's difficulties.
