Netflix to Produce Documentary on Daejon Love, Con Man Who Posed as 49ers Player
The series "Untold: Wide Deceiver" will detail how Love defrauded women of over $1.3 million using a fabricated identity and staged workouts.
Netflix has ordered a documentary, titled "Untold: Wide Deceiver," focusing on the scheme of Daejon Love, a 35-year-old man accused of defrauding women out of more than $1.3 million by pretending to be a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers.
According to federal prosecutors, Love and his alleged accomplice, Taylor Jamie Chan, used dating apps such as Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and Facebook Dating to target women across California, Oregon, and Washington. To maintain the illusion of being an NFL player, Love reportedly staged elaborate fake workouts, including footage of himself running routes on public beaches while wearing a replica 49ers helmet.
The fabricated persona also included staging mock contract signings and utilizing a replica 49ers helmet. Love would often cite an injured finger as an explanation for not being actively playing. An FBI affidavit details that representatives from the 49ers and the NFL confirmed Love had never been employed by either organization.
Love's alleged scheme unraveled in August when he and Chan were apprehended by the FBI at an airport in Boise, Idaho. Love was subsequently indicted on federal conspiracy and wire fraud charges. The FBI has identified dozens of victims in multiple states who were allegedly swindled by Love.
Prosecutors allege that Love would convince his victims he was not only an NFL player but also involved in real estate, subsequently pressuring them to take out high-interest personal loans. These loans were purportedly for fake, high-yield investment programs, none of which were ever funded. Instead, Love allegedly used the funds for luxury vehicles, designer jewelry, and extravagant vacations to support his affluent image.
When victims began questioning financial details or depleted their funds, Love reportedly ceased all contact. Love has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is being held without bail. A federal jury trial is scheduled for December 15.
