Netflix's 'Money Trap: The Karun Treasure' Offers Madcap Turkish Heist Comedy

Netflix's latest offering, 'Money Trap: The Karun Treasure,' is a madcap adventure from Turkey that leans more into comedy than serious crime.

The series, written by and starring Yılmaz Erdoğan, follows Asım Noyan, a con artist leading a team that includes his wife, Lerzan. Their latest scheme involves an ancient leather treasure map unearthed by two farmers. However, their plans are complicated when a wealthy woman, Nefise, seeks the map and employs a dangerous associate to retrieve it. Simultaneously, Asım finds himself indebted to a violent criminal named Sarı Saruhan, who puts pressure on him to pay off his substantial gambling debts.

Initially dismissive of the map's value, Asım begins to consider its potential as a genuine treasure guide, especially as his financial troubles mount. The series draws comparisons to the heist dramedy "Money Heist" spinoff "Berlin," suggesting a similar blend of suspense and humor.

Erdoğan portrays Asım not as a criminal mastermind, but as a flawed con artist grappling with financial woes. While his team is initially underdeveloped, their primary function appears to be assisting Asım in his pursuit of the treasure. The early episodes establish a frantic pace, with Saruhan's brutal methods—such as cracking walnuts while another debtor slowly drowns—adding a dark comedic edge.

Despite the chaotic elements, the series sets up an intriguing pursuit of a potentially mythical treasure, with Asım caught between Saruhan's threats and Nefise's operatives. Erdoğan's performance as Asım is noted for its blend of annoyance and scheming.

'Money Trap: The Karun Treasure' is intended as a lighthearted romp, and its initial episodes effectively lay the groundwork for the comedic caper that unfolds. The series is available for streaming on Netflix.
