Netflix's 'Below' Filmed in Newfoundland, Canada
The new Netflix thriller starring Josh Hartnett was filmed across various coastal communities and research facilities in Newfoundland, Canada.

The new Netflix thriller, Below, which stars Josh Hartnett as Calvin Penney, a Canadian fishing community member terrorized by a mysterious sea creature, was filmed on location in Newfoundland, Canada. The six-episode series, which also features Mackenzie Davis as marine researcher Dr. Fonda Howander, utilizes the island's remote coastal setting to enhance its suspenseful narrative.
The production brought the fictional town of Snooks Arm to life by filming in several real locations across Newfoundland. According to Netflix's filming-location map, these include the Ocean Sciences Centre in St. John's, a working marine research facility affiliated with Memorial University of Newfoundland. This facility serves as a setting in the first episode where Calvin attempts to sell a piece of iceberg he caught at sea.
Other identified filming sites include Marine Park in Pouch Cove, the Harbour Authority of Brigus South, and Pennecon Marine Base in Bay Bulls. The production also incorporated real local communities and businesses, with filming occurring at the Pouch Cove Heritage Society and Rising Tide Convenience in Harbour Main. Twillingate, a town in northeastern Newfoundland known as the "Iceberg Capital of the World," also served as a filming destination, providing a dramatic coastal backdrop for the show's ocean-centered premise.
Creator Jesse McKeown selected Newfoundland for its "unique" landscape and distinctive communities, describing it as a "rugged, dangerous, isolated, scary place in a lot of ways." He also noted the warmth and humor of the local people, which he felt contrasted with the intimidating surroundings and reflected the heart of the series, which explores the risks to family bonds and the town's future.
Below is now streaming on Netflix.
