Netflix Film Chief Dan Lin Departs Amid Streaming Giant's Executive Overhaul
Lin's exit follows recent departures of content boss Bela Bajaria and about 1,000 employee layoffs as the company restructures.
Dan Lin, the head of Netflix's film division, is departing the streaming service as part of a broader executive reshuffling. His departure comes just a week before Peter Rice is set to assume the role of chief content officer on October 26.
Lin took the helm of Netflix's film division in April 2024. His exit is one of several significant changes impacting the company's leadership ranks. Content boss Bela Bajaria has also departed, and approximately 1,000 employees have been laid off across various departments, including product, technology, legal, and human resources.
The recent workforce reductions have affected key positions within the film division, with film vice president Doug Belgrad and independent films director Sheroum Kim among those let go. Similar cuts have impacted the television division, leading to the departures of executives Lisa Lang McMullen, James Oh, Carolina Garcia, and Andrew McQuinn.
Lin, known for producing films such as "The Lego Movie" and the "It" franchise, was tasked with overseeing Netflix's movie slate and managing spending. He had previously revamped the division's structure, focusing on individual genres and prioritizing comedies, rom-coms, and adaptations of books. Under his tenure, Netflix released films including "Happy Gilmore 2," "The Rip," and "War Machine," while "Train Dreams" received critical acclaim.
However, Lin's tenure also saw friction with Hollywood talent over Netflix's approach to theatrical releases. He stated in June that directors seeking an initial theatrical release would not find a home at Netflix. Some industry professionals have expressed criticism regarding the consistent quality of Netflix films under Lin's leadership, citing the company's business model and financial structure as potential limitations.
In a statement, Lin expressed gratitude for his time at Netflix, saying, "It’s been a great privilege to lead this incredible team and work with amazing filmmakers and talent to bring their movies to the world." Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos acknowledged Lin's contributions, stating, "I’m grateful to Dan for everything he’s done for Netflix films."
The executive changes occur against a backdrop of increasing scrutiny regarding Netflix's ability to retain subscriber engagement. Jefferies estimates cited by Reuters indicate a decline in average monthly viewing hours per subscriber, falling from approximately 66 hours in the first half of 2023 to 49 hours in the first half of the current year. Despite these trends, Netflix reported second-quarter revenue of $12.56 billion, an increase of 13% year-over-year, with an operating margin of 33.4%.
Peter Rice, who previously held senior roles at 21st Century Fox and Disney, will oversee the film division on an interim basis until a permanent replacement for Lin is appointed. Rice's tenure at Disney concluded with his dismissal in 2022.
