A new docuseries from Netflix is examining the life and death of Mica Miller, the wife of a South Carolina pastor. The series, "Death of the Pastor's Wife," delves into the events leading up to Miller's death and the controversies surrounding her family and marriage.
Mica Miller's relationship with her husband, John-Paul Miller, is a central focus of the series. According to statements from her family, Mica experienced mental health struggles that allegedly began after she became involved with John-Paul. "She was mentally healthy until she got snared in his web," said Ward, referring to Mica on July 15, 2024. "There has been no evidence or incident or evaluations or diagnosis of her having any mental health problem until after she gets involved with John-Paul."
John-Paul Miller, in turn, has offered a different perspective. He claimed that Mica's family was so devout that they discouraged conventional medical treatment, favoring holistic practices instead. "If her family had simply looked at her and said, ‘Mica if you love him, you can go home and we’ll support you,’ she’d be alive today," John-Paul told Sun News. He also described their marriage as strong, despite external pressures. "The fact that we had such a great marriage that we did was pretty amazing. It’s very amazing, considering the stress of my job, considering the mental illness, considering her family. I mean, we did very, very well."
The docuseries also touches upon the family's religious background. John-Paul's father, Reginald Wayne Miller, is a pastor who founded the Cathedral Bible College. He also led one of South Carolina's largest charismatic churches, a denomination known for practices such as speaking in tongues, prophecy, and faith healing. This legacy of religious influence and leadership within the family is explored as part of the broader context of the case.
