A Netflix documentary titled "A Toxic Love Story" chronicles the complex and disturbing case of Michelle Hadley, who was falsely accused by her ex-boyfriend, former US Marshal Ian Diaz, and his then-wife, Angela Diaz, of sending threatening emails and orchestrating a "rape fantasy" plot. The accusations led to Hadley's arrest and 88-day imprisonment before her exoneration.

The events unfolded in May 2016, shortly after Ian and Angela Diaz were married. They claimed to be receiving threatening emails from an anonymous account, "Lilithistruth," or "Lilith." The messages contained biblical undertones and escalated to threats against Angela, who was allegedly pregnant at the time. Some emails reportedly included disturbing images and messages like, "You must be gone" and "An eye for an eye, you are finished."

Investigators later determined that Ian Diaz was the one behind the "Lilith" emails. Evidence found on his laptop confirmed his identity as "Lilith." Michelle Hadley had, in fact, sent the first two emails in September 2015, which she described as being written during a "nervous breakdown" and a dissociative episode stemming from complex PTSD developed during her relationship with Ian. She stated she was framed for the subsequent, more severe threats and cyberstalking.

The dispute between Ian Diaz and Michelle Hadley reportedly involved a condominium that they had originally purchased together. Friends of the couple, including one named Leslie, quickly suspected Hadley of sending the emails, especially amid the property dispute. This suspicion was further fueled when Ian and Angela accused Hadley of impersonating Angela and responding to a Craigslist ad from a man soliciting a "rape fantasy." They alleged Hadley attempted to lure the man to their condo to assault Angela.

The man who posted the ad, who appeared anonymously in the documentary, confirmed receiving a message from "Lilithistruth" and being given the Diaz's address. However, he became suspicious upon seeing Ian Diaz's name on the door and left, not wanting to enter a situation where the husband was unaware.

During police interviews, Hadley initially admitted to writing some of the "Lilith" emails, describing it as an "alternate persona" and feeling like she was "losing her mind." However, after her exoneration, investigators found evidence pointing to Ian Diaz's involvement in creating the "Lilith" persona and escalating the threats.

Further investigations uncovered deceptions by Angela Diaz. Years prior, before her relationship with Ian, she was accused by ex-boyfriends and friends of faking a Stage 4 cervical cancer diagnosis. She allegedly faked undergoing chemotherapy and positive pregnancy tests, using markers to alter test results and a doctored sonogram. After Hadley's arrest, it was discovered that Angela had drawn on pregnancy tests with blue markers to simulate positive results, leading Leslie to question the authenticity of the entire situation and ultimately inform the police of her doubts.

Angela Diaz was arrested in January 2017 and pleaded guilty to charges including fraud, false imprisonment, and falsely reporting a crime. She was sentenced to five years in prison. Ian Diaz's marriage to Angela was annulled in April 2017. He was later dismissed from the US Marshal service in 2023. Despite initially pleading not guilty, he was convicted of stalking, perjury, and obstruction of justice, and is currently serving a 10-year federal prison sentence in Texas.

Michele Hadley sued the Anaheim police department for her wrongful imprisonment and was awarded damages in 2021. She has since moved on, describing the birth of her daughter on the same day Ian was convicted as her "fairytale ending."
