Rajendra Dawadi, head teacher at the Trishuli Samudayik Boarding School in Nepal, is being lauded for his decisive action in evacuating approximately 900 children moments before a catastrophic flood inundated the campus. The flood, caused by a glacial lake outburst in the Himalayas, struck the school on August 30, 2026, transforming the grounds into a landscape of mud and debris.

A Swift Response to Danger

Dawadi received early warnings about the approaching floodwaters. He immediately initiated an evacuation, a decision that proved critical. The deluge arrived shortly after the children were safely moved to higher ground, leaving the school building completely buried. "Had I decided to close the school after the period, nothing might be left, only the bell would be ringing at 9:30," Dawadi stated, emphasizing the narrow margin between safety and disaster. The event highlights the devastating power of natural disasters, exacerbated by climate change, which can lead to such events as glacial lake outbursts.

The Human Impact

The aftermath left families in immense distress as they anxiously awaited news of their children. One parent recounted the harrowing experience of being unable to reach his daughter, Yunisha, for nearly an hour, fearing the worst. When communication was finally established, the relief was overwhelming. Yunisha, recalling the moment, said she could not speak when her father called, and relatives present also wept with joy and hugged each other. "Finally, my daughter received my call and I couldn't stop myself, broke out... two relatives that were with me also cried and hugged me," the father said.

Yunisha and her family were reunited after three days. Despite the immense relief, Yunisha expressed concern about her future studies. "Now I am worried about my further studies," she said. "If I had to change my school, I would have to miss my old friends and will face difficulties to make new friends. I am sad about my further studies."

Calls for Improved Warning Systems

Dawadi suggested that enhanced warning systems, including sirens and evacuation alerts, could have further aided residents in responding more swiftly to such emergencies. His decisive action, however, is credited with preventing a far greater tragedy at the school. The event underscores the critical role of timely warnings and effective leadership in mitigating the impact of natural disasters.
