Nelson Thomas, a veteran cast member of the reality competition series 'The Challenge,' has returned for its 42nd season, titled 'The Challenge: Cutthroat.' The new season, which premiered on Paramount+ and MTV, features Thomas candidly discussing the severe injuries he sustained in a drunk driving accident in 2022. This marks his return to the show after a hiatus due to his recovery.

In the season premiere, Thomas shared the physical toll of the accident, which resulted in the amputation of his right foot. He revealed undergoing 32 screws, two plates, and eight surgeries over six months to address the damage. "Thank God I didn’t hurt anyone else but myself," Thomas stated in a confessional, reflecting on the experience. "I realized I’m still here. I have the opportunity to be living proof of showing that it’s okay to make a mistake. It’s okay to make a bad choice, but own it."

Thomas was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) on the night of the crash. A warrant for his arrest was issued in June 2023 after a blood sample was obtained while he was being treated for his injuries. He expressed a firm commitment to never drinking and driving again, stating, "I’ll be damned if I ever, ever drink and drive a car again."

This is not Thomas's first encounter with legal issues. In 2018, he served jail time for a misdemeanor charge related to stolen property valued between $100 and $750. At the time, Thomas addressed the incident on social media, stating he turned himself in to clear his name on a five-year-old charge as an alternative to probation and that he had been cooperating with law enforcement.

Thomas has been a recurring figure on 'The Challenge' for 11 seasons and has reached the finals in three of them. 'The Challenge: Cutthroat' features a cast including other reality television personalities from shows like 'Survivor,' alongside former winners of 'The Challenge.' New episodes of season 42 are released Wednesdays on Paramount+ and air on MTV.
