Nelly Reveals Taylor Swift Paid Him $50,000 Cash in McDonald's Bag for Surprise Concert Appearance
The rapper recounted how Swift requested his presence for a three-minute performance during her 2011 Speak Now World Tour.
Rapper Nelly has shared details of an unexpected collaboration with pop superstar Taylor Swift, revealing that she paid him $50,000 in cash, delivered in a McDonald's bag, for a surprise three-minute performance during her 2011 Speak Now World Tour. Nelly recounted the experience in a recent interview on The Breakfast Club, stating that Swift contacted him directly to request his appearance.
Swift, then 21, had choreographed a dance routine to Nelly's 2002 hit "Hot in Herre" and wanted him to surprise the audience at her concert in Houston, Texas. Due to budget limitations, Swift could only offer a flat fee of $50,000. Nelly, who has known Swift and her team for a long time, jokingly asked if the payment could be delivered in a McDonald's bag, a request Swift humorously fulfilled.
"She called me one night, just out of the blue, and said, 'Yo, Nelly, listen, me and my friends, we made a routine to Hot in Herre last night and I wanna ask you a really big favor,'" Nelly explained. He noted that Swift offered to send a private jet to transport him and cover his accommodations, but the offered fee was $50,000.
Swift provided a G5 private jet to fly Nelly and his entourage to Houston, where Swift was performing to large crowds at a baseball stadium. Upon arrival, Swift's manager reportedly presented Nelly with a McDonald's bag containing $50,000 in cash. Nelly emphasized that the payment was not the primary motivation, stating he would have performed for free. Swift also arranged for a presidential suite at a hotel, though Nelly mentioned they did not have time to use it due to their immediate return travel after the performance.
While Nelly recalled the specific event as occurring during the Speak Now World Tour in Houston, he also mentioned performing other songs with Swift on different occasions. These include "Just a Dream" in Houston, "Hey Porsche" in St. Louis during Swift's Red Tour in 2013, and "The Fix" and "Hot in Herre" during Swift's 1989 World Tour in 2015.
Nelly's revelation comes shortly after Swift's induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. During her acceptance speech, Swift described fame as a byproduct of her passion for music, acknowledging that it can lead to unexpected chaos but that she navigates it by recalling her early songwriting roots in Nashville.
