Neil Bush Endorses Democrat in Texas Senate Race, Citing Concerns Over Trump's Influence
The Bush family member broke with Republican tradition, backing James Talarico over Ken Paxton due to worries about political culture.
Neil Bush, a member of the prominent Bush political family, has endorsed Democratic Texas Senate hopeful James Talarico, stating his vote was motivated by a deep concern over Ken Paxton's record and a belief that Donald Trump and his enablers have harmed the Republican Party and the country.
In a Facebook post, Neil Bush announced his early vote for Talarico, a departure from his usual practice of refraining from political commentary on social media. He expressed admiration for Talarico's character and principles, alongside his reservations about the current political climate.
"I believe Donald Trump and those who have enabled him have done enormous damage to the Republican Party," Neil Bush wrote. "I worry about a political culture in which loyalty to an individual takes precedence over loyalty to principle, and where those who hold power begin to believe they are no longer accountable."
This endorsement marks a notable break from the Republican Party's longstanding tradition for the Bush family. While former President George W. Bush has maintained cordial relationships with Democratic former presidents, his relationship with former President Trump has been strained since the 2016 election.
Neil Bush is not the first member of his family to support Talarico. Barbara Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush, previously contributed $2,500 to Lone Star Rising PAC, a super PAC supporting the Democratic candidate, according to federal campaign finance records. Lone Star Rising PAC is a significant outside spender in the race against Paxton.
The younger Bush's support for a Democrat aligns with a trend observed in former President George W. Bush's post-presidency, which has increasingly featured bipartisan engagements, including his attendance at the opening of former President Barack Obama's presidential center in Chicago.
Neil Bush's public statement of support comes as the Texas Senate race intensifies, with external groups like MAGA Inc. reportedly investing millions to support Ken Paxton. Talarico's campaign aims to capitalize on a desire for change among some voters who are disillusioned with the current political direction.
