Neighbor Pulls 4-Year-Old from Mississippi House Fire

A neighbor in Edwards, Mississippi, rescued a 4-year-old boy from a house fire by digging through smoldering wreckage with his bare hands, according to recently released police bodycam footage.

Kennard Hodge was among neighbors and first responders searching the property on October 7th after the blaze erupted. The footage shows Hodge, wearing a yellow shirt, sifting through debris. He located the boy, who was reportedly trapped in a bedroom and suffering from burns.

"You got him?" a first responder asked Hodge. "Yeah, I got him, got him, got him!" Hodge responded.

Hodge stated he acted quickly to give the child a chance at survival. The boy was not breathing when pulled from the wreckage and received CPR at the scene before being transported to a hospital. The Hinds County Sheriff's Office reported on October 8th that the child was in critical condition, with no further updates released.

Edwards Police Chief Terrence Crump described the rescue as "nothing short of a miracle."

In addition to the 4-year-old, five other children, aged 2 to 13, were rescued from the burning home. The cause and origin of the fire are currently under investigation, and authorities plan to interview individuals connected to the incident.
