Neighbor Noticed Unkempt Lawn as Possible Sign Before NJ Family's Murder-Suicide
A neighbor of the Grodnick family reported that the once meticulously maintained lawn of their $1.7 million home had fallen into disrepair in the months leading up to the tragedy.
A neighbor of the Grodnick family has suggested that the neglect of their once-pristine lawn may have been an indicator of the executive's declining mental state prior to the murder-suicide that claimed his wife, daughter, and himself.
David Grodnick, 61, his wife Lora, 62, and their daughter Sloane, 24, were discovered deceased from gunshot wounds in their Montgomery Township, New Jersey, residence. The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office confirmed their identities on Tuesday, classifying the deaths of Lora and Sloane as homicides and David's as a suicide.
Mian Helaly, a neighbor, told The New York Post that he observed a significant change in the Grodnick household's landscaping habits over the past few months. "I thought the house was number one in the [neighborhood for] maintaining their lawn," Helaly stated. "I think a couple of months or more they were not maintaining it. It was very unusual. It disturbed me."
Helaly described the Grodnicks as having invested considerable resources into their property, including new trees and yard maintenance, with both David and Lora actively participating. "All of a sudden, I noticed that in recent months they were not focusing on the lawn. The grass was ground out. They were not trimming the trees," he added.
Helaly interpreted the unkempt lawn as a sign that "something was not right" and "not going their way," expressing that the triple killing was "very, very shocking."
Authorities were alerted to the residence last Thursday after receiving a welfare check request. Upon failing to make contact, law enforcement entered the property on Friday, discovering the bodies. Lora and Sloane were found in separate bedrooms, while David Grodnick was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Prosecutor's Office has stated that the investigation is ongoing but has determined that the homicides of Lora and Sloane Grodnick were an isolated incident, with no ongoing threat to the public. Further details are currently unavailable.
According to Montgomery News, David Grodnick held the position of senior vice president at Land Services USA, an insurance agency. He was an alumnus of the University of Miami, where he earned a degree in business administration, and also held a BA in English from McDaniel College.
Sloane Grodnick was a graduate of The Hun School, a private boarding school in Princeton, and later attended the Savannah College of Art and Design.
The family had relocated from Princeton to Montgomery Township and were members of the exclusive Bedens Brook Country Club in Skillman.
