A San Antonio resident has been charged with capital murder in the fatal shooting of two brothers, Maliki Perales, 11, and Drayvn Quiroz, 20, who were killed on August 4 as they backed into their driveway. Daniel Antonio Perez, 40, allegedly ran across the street and fired on the brothers without provocation.
Perez also allegedly fired at two other siblings but missed, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar. The brothers' father attempted to perform CPR on his sons, but Maliki Perales was pronounced dead at the scene with gunshot wounds to the head and torso. Drayvn Quiroz died the following morning.
Perez fled the scene and called 911 to report the shootings. Investigators located him hiding in a backyard after tracking his cell phone signal. A handgun, believed to be the weapon used in the attack, was recovered.
Salazar described Perez as a "ticking time bomb" and stated there was no known history or apparent provocation for the attack. However, he noted that family members have since reported that Perez may have been experiencing mental health crises, including depression and possible hallucinations, though these issues had not been reported to authorities. Salazar emphasized that Perez’s actions indicated he had the mental capacity to conceal the weapon and himself.
Perez faces upgraded charges including two counts of capital murder, as well as four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held on a $2.3 million bond.
The victims' father, Andrew Perales, expressed his grief and spoke about his sons' character, describing them as strong individuals with good morals and values. He recounted hearing gunshots while ordering food and finding one of his sons after running outside. He stated he had no comment for the alleged killer, adding, "The devil knows my intentions, but God knows my heart."
A GoFundMe has been established to support the family during this time.
