The NBA has levied severe penalties against the Los Angeles Clippers for violating salary cap circumvention rules related to the 2021 signing of Kawhi Leonard. The league announced sanctions including the forfeiture of five first-round draft picks, a $30 million fine, and a five-year monitoring program for the organization.
Key figures within the Clippers organization also received individual punishments. Team owner Steve Ballmer has been suspended from all league and team activities for one year. President of basketball operations Lawrence Frank was suspended for six months without pay. The league accused Frank of failing to report and facilitating illegal requests made by Dennis Robertson, Leonard's uncle and former business manager.
A crucial element in the NBA's investigation was the cooperation received from entities with ties to the Clippers. According to ESPN insider Brian Windhorst, President Lawrence Frank voluntarily handed over six-year-old notes he had kept detailing "illicit deals" with Robertson. This cooperation reportedly earned Frank leniency in his suspension.
Robertson himself has been banned by the league from engaging with any team for five years. The NBA's investigation reportedly received significant information due to the willingness of companies involved to share details, as they wished to maintain their business relationships with the league.
The Clippers organization has rejected the NBA's findings and stated its intent to "vigorously challenge these findings and penalties through every avenue available to us and look forward to an ethical and impartial arbitration process."
