NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Reconsiders Seattle Expansion, Mentions Mexico City

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has reportedly informed league owners that Seattle is no longer guaranteed an expansion team, according to ESPN. Silver allegedly floated Mexico City as a potential expansion alternative during a meeting with the board of governors last month, a move that has fueled frustration among Seattleites eager for the return of the SuperSonics.

Last March, NBA owners voted to explore expansion in both Seattle and Las Vegas. This decision had led many to believe that the Sonics would eventually return to Seattle, a city that lost its NBA franchise to Oklahoma City in 2008. The prospect of a return seemed further solidified when One Roof Sports, the group leading Seattle's bid, secured billionaire backing from Melinda French Gates.

However, Silver's recent suggestion of Mexico City as a viable expansion market appears to be a strategic maneuver to increase potential franchise values. Bids for a new team in Las Vegas are projected to exceed $10 billion, while Seattle's bids are expected to be lower, partly due to the existing NBA-ready Climate Pledge Arena.

This situation presents a complex financial dynamic for potential owners. Groups seeking an NBA team in Seattle might face challenges securing revenue streams from arena operations if they do not control the venue, potentially necessitating the construction of a new arena at an additional cost of billions. This could give One Roof Sports an advantage over competing bidders, lessening their incentive to offer top dollar.

By introducing Mexico City as an option, Silver appears to be leveraging the league's potential to expand internationally. This could be interpreted as a tactic to drive up the bids from prospective owners in Seattle. While Silver has not made explicit promises to Seattle, nor committed to adding two teams simultaneously, his approach is aimed at securing the most financially advantageous outcome for the league's existing 30 owners. The commissioner's role, as highlighted by the report, is to maximize value for the league, even if it means potentially disappointing fan bases like those in Seattle.
