NBA Champion Questions if Luka Doncic Can Lead a Team to a Title
Former NBA player Channing Frye expressed doubts about Luka Doncic's playstyle leading to a championship, drawing comparisons to James Harden.
Former NBA champion Channing Frye has voiced skepticism about Luka Doncic's ability to lead a team to an NBA title, suggesting the Dallas Mavericks star's style of play may not translate to championship success.
Frye shared his opinion on the "Road Trippin' Show" podcast, stating, "I love Luka. I just don’t think the way he plays basketball is going to win a championship." He further elaborated, "I think Luka is a lot like James Harden. Both of those guys are amazing, but their usage rate is not equating to championships. Who plays like that?"
Doncic, who recently joined the Los Angeles Lakers, has drawn criticism for his defensive performance, with some, like Max Kellerman, labeling him as "lazy."
Despite these criticisms, Doncic has demonstrated significant offensive prowess. The Lakers are off to a 4-1 start to the season, tied for second place in their conference. In his first four games, Doncic has recorded multiple 40-point performances, including a 52-point outing that has positioned him as an early MVP candidate. He is shooting 44% from three-point range and 56.7% from the field, with a nearly perfect free-throw record.
Doncic has prior experience in the NBA Finals, having played in the 2024 series with the Dallas Mavericks. However, the Mavericks lost the series 4-1 to the Boston Celtics. In that series, Doncic averaged 29.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 2.6 steals, but the supporting cast struggled to match his output.
This season, the Lakers have aimed to build a strong roster around Doncic, re-signing Austin Reaves to a four-year, $185 million contract and acquiring center Walker Kessler. Reaves is averaging 24.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 5.4 assists, while Kessler is contributing 14.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game. Kessler is currently second in the NBA in blocks.
