NBA Champion Kyle Kuzma Criticizes Obama's Pitch in Michigan Senate Race

Milwaukee Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma has publicly disagreed with remarks made by former President Barack Obama during a rally supporting Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. Obama had suggested El-Sayed, who is Muslim, and Sen. Elissa Slotkin, who is Jewish, could form a "power duo" in the Senate.

Kuzma, a native of Flint, Michigan, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his viewpoint. He stated that the religious identities of political representatives are not a primary concern for Michigan voters. "This desperate pysop (sic) is unbearable to watch in Michigan. so tired of listening to it," Kuzma wrote. He contrasted the focus on religion with pressing issues such as poverty, noting that "1 in 4 black people in Michigan are below the poverty line." He further emphasized that Michigan's Muslim and Jewish populations each constitute only about 1 percent of the state's residents, questioning the relevance of highlighting religious affiliation.

The Michigan Senate race is a closely contested election. A Fox News Poll released on September 30 indicated a narrow one-point lead for El-Sayed over his opponent, Mike Rogers. The poll also revealed that key concerns for Michigan voters include the cost of living, immigration, and U.S. policy toward Israel.

Former President Obama's rally appearance in Detroit on Saturday was aimed at galvanizing support for El-Sayed and other Democratic candidates. The election is scheduled for November 3.
