The U.S. Navy is enhancing supply provisions for its next aircraft carrier deployment following reports of severe hardships faced by sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln during a nearly nine-month mission. The USS Theodore Roosevelt, set to depart San Diego for a seven-to-eight month deployment, will have its food, retail products, and hygiene items maximized before leaving port, according to Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle.
Conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln reportedly deteriorated significantly after an Iranian attack on a Navy base in Bahrain, a key supply hub. Originally deployed to the South China Sea in November, the carrier was rerouted to the Arabian Sea in January to support Operation Epic Fury against Iran. By August, family members of the Lincoln's approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines reported critical shortages, including toiletries like soap and deodorant, and depleted food supplies.
Rep. Mike Levin (D-Calif.) highlighted the dire circumstances in an August 7 post on X, detailing issues such as "moldy showers, broken toilets, no hot water for weeks, meals that came down to half a cup of rice and two tortillas." He also cited a warning from the ship's doctor about the crew's deteriorating physical and mental state.
The Lincoln was eventually relieved by the USS George Washington and is en route back to California after a stop in Thailand. In response to concerns raised by lawmakers, Adm. Caudle stated that the Navy is prioritizing sailors' quality of life.
"That means new entertainment equipment on the mess decks, more durable fitness equipment, spare cardio machines ready for our placement, and even holiday materials purchased ahead of time," Caudle said in a video announcement Tuesday. He also emphasized efforts to ensure more reliable and consistent communication for sailors to stay connected with their families.
Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Perryman added that the Navy is converting available spaces into additional storage to increase self-sufficiency during deployments, particularly when resupply operations might be challenging.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt is expected to deploy to the Middle East, although the Pentagon does not confirm specific ship destinations. Currently, two aircraft carrier strike groups and an amphibious ready group are operating in the region to support military operations and maintain a presence toward Iran. Naval assets have also been involved in clearing mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
