Navigating Halloween with Food Allergies: A Guide for Inclusion

Halloween celebrations, often centered around sugary treats, can present significant challenges for children with food allergies. Navigating parties and trick-or-treating requires careful planning and increased awareness from both families with allergic children and the wider community.

Ciara, a 15-year-old allergic to milk and eggs, described the necessity of meticulously checking every food label and delaying consumption until she could verify ingredients at home. She highlighted that while many friends and acquaintances are supportive, a lack of understanding about the potential severity of allergic reactions can still be a concern. Ciara and her friends have taken proactive steps, with her teaching them how to respond in an emergency, including the use of EpiPens, which are adrenaline auto-injectors.

Her mother, Claire McGuigan, expressed pride in Ciara's management of her allergies, emphasizing the constant parental worry that accompanies raising a child with food allergies. McGuigan stressed the importance of preventative measures over reliance on emergency medication and the value of a supportive friend group. She advocates for a national conversation about the emotional toll on families managing allergies, urging them to celebrate small victories and not let allergies define their children's lives.

Caolán, who is allergic to nuts, dairy, and eggs, has a heightened awareness of risk due to a past severe anaphylactic reaction that required intensive care. His mother, Colette Donaghy, believes it's crucial for children like Caolán to be understood without being made to feel different. When trick-or-treating, Caolán waits until others have received their treats before informing householders about his allergies and checking his options. Donaghy suggests practical measures such as distributing individually wrapped sweets to minimize cross-contamination, offering non-food alternatives like small toys or fruit, and utilizing teal pumpkins as a visible signal that a house offers allergy-friendly options.

Niamh Kennedy, chair of Food Allergy NI, an organization dedicated to creating a safer society for those with food allergies, noted that special occasions often revolve around food, adding a layer of planning and anxiety for affected families. She advises proactive thinking to ensure inclusivity, recommending measures such as offering non-food alternatives, providing clear ingredient information, communicating in advance, and being mindful of cross-contact risks. Kennedy emphasizes that thoughtfulness and understanding can significantly impact whether an individual feels included or excluded during celebratory events.
