Navanethem Pillay Awarded 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, a South African jurist and former U.N. high commissioner for human rights, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee cited her "efforts to promote peace and international law" as the reason for the award.

Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the committee, highlighted Pillay's consistent commitment to universal legal principles throughout her career. Born in Durban, South Africa, under apartheid to a family of Indian Tamil origin, Pillay became a lawyer and a pioneer in confronting systemic discrimination, segregation, and exclusion.

Frydnes noted that Pillay's early work defending individuals like Nelson Mandela, who opposed apartheid, is a common thread that extends to her service as a judge in significant international court cases. Her career has been marked by a dedication to justice and human rights on a global scale.
