Nato Jets Intercept British Airways Flight Amid Terror Fears
German Eurofighter Typhoons scrambled after pilots failed to respond to air traffic controllers for 30 minutes.
Nato fighter jets intercepted a British Airways flight over terror fears after its pilots failed to respond to air traffic controllers on their way back to London Heathrow. German military Eurofighter Typhoons were deployed to shadow Flight BA899 after it went silent on both primary and backup frequencies for approximately 30 minutes, raising concerns of a potential terror incident at 34,000 feet.
Communication was eventually re-established with the crew, who were reportedly "embarrassed" by the incident. A source told The Sun that the pilots initially wished to avoid alarming passengers and asked the fighter jets to maintain a distance. However, the fighter jet pilots were under orders to inspect the cockpit and therefore had to fly parallel to the aircraft.
The inspection confirmed there was no terror incident. The fighter jets continued to escort the BA flight until it reached the German border. The pilots involved remain on duty while British Airways investigates the circumstances.
A spokesperson for British Airways stated that all procedures for such situations were followed and communication was re-established, allowing the flight to continue safely. The airline is reviewing the situation to understand what occurred.
In a separate incident, another BA flight from Cyprus, BA707 from Larnaca, was diverted to Gatwick Airport after departing three hours late, causing it to miss Heathrow's late-night curfew. Heathrow enforces movement restrictions during late hours to mitigate noise pollution for nearby residents. The diverted flight eventually landed at Gatwick at 12:12 a.m. on Tuesday.
