Two Italian Eurofighter Typhoons operating under NATO command intercepted and shot down an unidentified drone over Lithuanian airspace early Tuesday, officials confirmed. The incident marks the first time a drone has been downed in the Baltic nation's airspace.

The aircraft scrambled from Siauliai air base and destroyed the drone near the village of Pratkūnai, approximately 60 miles west of the capital, Vilnius. NATO officials stated the operation was coordinated through the alliance's Combined Air Operations Centre in Uedem, Germany, and that investigations are ongoing.

Lithuanian authorities believe the drone likely entered from neighboring Belarus and remained in the country's airspace for about 30 minutes before being intercepted. The recovered drone is believed to have been carrying explosives, according to Lithuanian Air Force Commander Antanas Matutis. Investigations are underway to determine its origin and purpose.

This event occurs as tensions escalate along NATO's eastern flank. On Monday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned that strikes close to alliance territory demonstrated Russian President Vladimir Putin's "desperation" and "desire to sow fear and terror." Rutte stated that Russia is growing "increasingly reckless" in its war against Ukraine and pledged to reinforce NATO defenses along the eastern flank.

In a separate but related incident, Denmark reported that a Russian frigate fired flares towards a Danish military helicopter conducting surveillance over the Baltic Sea. Denmark summoned the Russian ambassador in response to this encounter.

Meanwhile, Russia has continued its drone attacks within Ukraine, with officials reporting three fatalities in Kyiv, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk. Ukrainian forces have also targeted Russian infrastructure, striking an oil refinery in Syzran and a drone production facility in Taganrog.
