Nato Fighter Jets Intercept British Airways Flight Over Communication Blackout

Nato fighter jets intercepted a British Airways flight from Cyprus to London Heathrow over concerns of a potential terror incident after the pilots lost communication with air traffic controllers. German military Eurofighter Typhoons were deployed to follow Flight BA899 when it failed to respond to calls on either its primary or backup radio frequencies for approximately 30 minutes.

The incident occurred while the plane was flying at 34,000 feet. A source told The Sun that pilots on the ground had wished to avoid alarming passengers and requested that the fighter jets remain behind the aircraft. However, the fighter jets were under orders to inspect the cockpit, necessitating a flight parallel to the passenger plane.

Following an inspection, the crew re-established communication, and the pilots reportedly expressed embarrassment about the situation. A British Airways spokesperson stated that all procedures for such events were followed, communication was re-established, and the flight continued safely. The airline is investigating the circumstances that led to the communication failure.

In a separate incident, another British Airways flight from Cyprus was diverted to Gatwick Airport after it missed Heathrow's late-night curfew. Flight BA707, departing from Larnaca, was redirected after a three-hour delay, ultimately landing at Gatwick shortly after midnight on Tuesday. Heathrow enforces noise restrictions to mitigate the impact on residents living near its flight paths.
