National Security Adviser's Wife Sparks Outrage with Support for Banned Group
Sarah Helm's social media post aligning with Palestine Action draws criticism and raises questions for her husband, Jonathan Powell.
Sarah Helm, wife of senior Downing Street aide and national security adviser Jonathan Powell, has ignited controversy with a social media post expressing support for Palestine Action, a group proscribed under terrorism legislation. Helm, an author and journalist, declared herself among "us authors who support Palestine and Palestine Action" in response to a comment about author Sally Rooney's stance on the organization.
Rooney had previously stated she would no longer sell her books in the UK due to her support for Palestine Action, and intended to donate proceeds from her works and BBC adaptations to the group. However, her publisher, Faber, indicated this could not proceed due to the ban.
Membership or support for proscribed groups like Palestine Action can carry a penalty of up to 14 years imprisonment. Helm's comment has led to calls for investigation and for her to "face the full force of the law." Critics, including the advocacy group Campaign Against Antisemitism, have stated that her remarks raise "extremely serious questions" for her husband, Jonathan Powell, who advises the government on national security and has been involved in Middle East diplomacy.
Palestine Action was banned on July 5, 2025, by then-Home Secretary Yvette Cooper under the Terrorism Act 2000. The group's proscription followed incidents including activists breaching RAF Brize Norton and spray-painting military aircraft, as well as extensive criminal damage reported at defense factories in Glasgow, Kent, and Bristol.
Since the ban, over 3,700 individuals have reportedly been arrested for expressing support for the group. Notable arrests include an 84-year-old retired priest and a 94-year-old human rights barrister.
A government spokesperson stated that Helm's views do not represent the government in any capacity. The Daily Mail has reached out to the Metropolitan Police and Ms. Helm for comment.
