National Security Adviser's Wife Sparks Controversy With Social Media Posts

Sarah Helm, wife of Prime Minister's National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, is facing scrutiny over a series of provocative social media posts, some of which appear to express support for Palestine Action, a proscribed group. The posts have led to questions about national security and Powell's ability to continue in his role.

During a government briefing, a spokeswoman was pressed on Helm's activity on X, formerly Twitter. Some of the posts are old, while others are more recent, with the majority focusing on the Gaza conflict. Critics allege that two of Helm's tweets appear to endorse Palestine Action, prompting a police investigation that cleared her of criminality. Another tweet suggested her husband was not involved in banning the group, leading to accusations of leaking confidential government information.

Helm has also reportedly attacked critics of Hamas and cast doubt on whether the organization carried out mass rape during the October 7 attacks. Older posts resurfaced where she allegedly praised Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and discussed the 'Jewish Lobby' and its access to 'British corridors of power.' Downing Street has stated that Helm does not represent the government in any capacity.

Jonathan Powell, a seasoned diplomat and advisor, was appointed National Security Adviser in 2024. His career has involved sensitive roles, including serving as Tony Blair's Chief of Staff and as the UK's special envoy to Libya. His wife, Sarah Helm, a left-wing journalist, has a history of strong public opinions, including opposition to Brexit and criticism of Boris Johnson. Her commentary on the Middle East has been described as strongly anti-Israel.

The controversy comes as Powell was reportedly engaged in delicate negotiations in East Jerusalem concerning the future of the British consulate. Critics argue that the ongoing row over his wife's social media activity complicates these sensitive diplomatic efforts.

Helm's posts on X, where she has been active since 2012, have included messages of support for Palestine Action. While Scotland Yard determined her posts did not meet the criminal threshold, her subsequent question about Palestine Action being 'unbanned' drew criticism. Shadow national security minister Alicia Kearns wrote to the Prime Minister, raising concerns about the handling of sensitive information and whether Powell can credibly continue in his post.

Further scrutiny of Helm's posts revealed comments made on the day of the October 7 attacks, where she questioned comments by EU President Ursula von der Leyen and referred to 'Israel's Gaza prison.' In later posts, she reportedly expressed skepticism about reports of rape by Hamas and questioned the lack of forensic evidence from alleged victims. A 2018 post complaining about Palestinians lacking a voice in British corridors of power, unlike the 'Jewish lobby,' has also drawn criticism, with the Labour Against Anti-Semitism group calling for Powell's dismissal.

Helm has publicly defended her views, accusing critics of misrepresenting her statements. Her history of making headlines for her husband's employers dates back to the early days of their relationship. A 1997 newspaper report revealed Powell's separation from his first wife and his relationship with Helm, who was pregnant with their child. In 2000, Helm wrote an article critical of European integration, prompting Downing Street to issue a statement clarifying Powell's differing views. The couple married in 2007.

Helm was also a vocal opponent of the Iraq War, participating in protest marches with their daughters. In 2006, she wrote a piece critical of Tony Blair's handling of the Middle East. A play she wrote in 2011, titled 'Loyalty,' dramatized tensions between a war opponent and her husband, a chief of staff. In 2016, she published a transcript of a call between Tony Blair and George W. Bush prior to the Iraq invasion, stating she overheard the conversation while her husband was on an 'antiquated secure phone.' This act led to questions about the leaking of official information.

Despite reports of Powell's potential retirement, colleagues insist he has no plans to step down. This means the National Security Adviser, responsible for delicate relationships with Israel, will continue in his post with his spouse maintaining outspoken views and a history of public controversy.
