National Lottery Powerball Jackpot Reaches $318 Million, Largest in UK History
A potential British winner of the massive Powerball jackpot would secure the largest lottery prize ever awarded in the UK.
The National Lottery's Powerball jackpot has surged to an estimated £318 million (approximately $503 million USD), marking the potential for the largest lottery prize ever won in the United Kingdom. This significant sum is the result of multiple rollovers, with the jackpot growing following the latest draw.
Powerball allows Britons to participate for £4 per line, competing against US players for jackpots that can escalate into billions. Prizes are typically paid out over a 30-year period. The current £318 million jackpot is substantial enough to potentially surpass the fortunes of notable celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Denzel Washington, and Robbie Williams.
The largest Powerball prize on record was $2.04 billion, claimed by a winner in California in November 2022.
Entries for the upcoming draw are expected to close this evening at 11:55 p.m. If no winner emerges in Tuesday's draw, the jackpot is anticipated to increase further before the subsequent draw on Thursday.
Research conducted by the National Lottery indicates a strong inclination among potential winners to share their winnings. Approximately 97% of respondents expressed a desire to share their newfound wealth with others, with 60% indicating they would share with their partner. Fifty-two percent said they would share with their children, and 47% planned to offer a portion to their parents. Additionally, 10% of those surveyed indicated they would extend their generosity beyond immediate family and friends.
Andy Carter, Senior Winners' Advisor at Allwyn, the operator of The National Lottery, commented on the public's fascination with large jackpots. "We all do it. Close our eyes and start spending a jackpot win as soon as we've purchased our ticket," Carter said. "And with a Powerball jackpot of £318 million currently up for grabs, it's no surprise people are daydreaming about how a truly life-changing sum could transform their lives."
He added that dreams often extend beyond personal purchases, including aspirations like buying neighboring properties to choose one's neighbors or helping loved ones. Carter noted that while playful fantasies are common, "generosity remains a huge part of the dream, with most people saying they'd share their winnings with family, friends and the people who matter most to them."
To play Powerball, participants select five main numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26, or opt for a Lucky Dip. Winning the jackpot requires matching all five main numbers and the Powerball number. The UK version of the game includes an additional prize tier for matching just two main numbers, awarding £8.
Draws for Powerball take place from Florida around 4 a.m. UK time on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The jackpot is shared among winners across both the US and the UK. The figure advertised for UK winners is an estimate of the amount received over 30 years, after UK taxes.
