Two National Guard soldiers shot and killed a gunman during a foot chase in downtown Memphis early Sunday morning, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). The incident occurred around 4 a.m. after police responded to a shots-fired call.
During the response, the soldiers reportedly assisted, leading to a chase with the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson. The TBI stated that for reasons under investigation, the situation escalated, resulting in the two National Guard soldiers firing upon Johnson, striking and killing him.
Memphis police had previously reported that Johnson turned toward the soldiers with a gun in his hand before they discharged their weapons, though this detail was not included in the TBI's initial statement. The TBI is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
