National Australia Bank Cuts 2,500 Jobs Amid AI and Offshoring Concerns

National Australia Bank (NAB) is set to eliminate approximately 1,500 jobs before the end of the year, with an additional 1,000 roles slated for reduction by the end of its 2027 financial year. The cuts represent about six percent of NAB's total workforce, with corporate functions expected to be most affected.

Workers at the bank have voiced concerns about the increasing use of artificial intelligence and the offshoring of work contributing to the job losses. Some employees learned their roles might be among those targeted and will have to reapply for a smaller pool of positions. Those unsuccessful are expected to have their final day of employment by December 17.

NAB Group chief executive Andrew Irvine acknowledged the difficulty of the changes, stating that support would be offered to impacted colleagues. He noted that the workforce restructuring is intended to better address challenges posed by economic conditions, customer expectations, competition, and technological advancements. Irvine emphasized that the changes would primarily affect corporate functions and not customer-facing banking roles, with deeper cuts made to senior management positions to simplify processes and improve cross-functional collaboration.

The Finance Sector Union (FSU) criticized NAB's decision to implement such significant job cuts shortly before Christmas, calling it a "wrecking ball" that would create chaos and anxiety among staff. The union expressed dismay at the timing and scale of the redundancies, suggesting a disconnect between NAB's leadership and its employees' experiences.

The bank announced it expects to incur a restructuring charge of approximately $300 million pre-tax in the 2026-27 financial year, covering costs associated with redundancies, redeployment, and organizational redesign.

NAB's actions follow similar trends among Australia's other major banks. Commonwealth Bank previously laid off around 300 workers and increased its workforce in India. ANZ also announced plans to cut 3,500 jobs over a 12-month period. These moves highlight a broader industry shift involving technological integration and global workforce adjustments.
