Recent images captured by NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars have fueled speculation about extraterrestrial life, although the space agency emphasizes that no credible evidence of alien beings has been discovered.

One photograph, taken on April 10, 2024, by the Curiosity rover in Gale Crater, depicts a rocky Martian landscape with a peculiar black object seemingly suspended above the horizon. The image was taken as the rover traversed rocky terrain near the Gediz Vallis ridge. The object's unexplained shape quickly led to theories on social media suggesting alien activity on Mars. However, the single frame does not confirm the object is a flying craft or even a physical entity. It could not be NASA's Ingenuity helicopter, which was located approximately 2,300 miles away.

Mundane explanations for the object include airborne dust, a camera artifact, or a cosmic ray impacting the rover's image sensor. The rover has been investigating the potential for ancient microbial life on Mars for 14 years.

This is not the first time an anomaly from the Curiosity rover has captured public attention. In an image taken on August 20, 2023, a small, dark figure with what appeared to be two spindly legs was visible in the distance. This discovery, noted by X user Kari Sivertzen, also sparked theories of alien life or even mechanical devices. Images taken of the same area moments before the figure appeared showed no sign of it. The photo featuring the figure was the last one posted by NASA for that day, with the next image taken nearly two hours later in a different direction.

Skeptics often attribute such sightings to corrupted pixels or camera glitches, referred to by space officials as artifacts. Researchers have compared the 2023 object to "tripod-like objects" or even the alien walkers from "War of the Worlds."

NASA declared in September 2025 that it had found the clearest signs of ancient microbial life on Mars through a sample collected by the Perseverance rover. However, both the space agency and the White House have consistently stated that no evidence of intelligent life has ever been detected on the planet.
