Napheesa Collier's Speech Sparks Reflection as WNBA Seeks New Leadership

Napheesa Collier's candid assessment of WNBA leadership, delivered at the close of the 2025 season, is being viewed as a significant moment as the league prepares for a transition in its top role. Collier had publicly described WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert's leadership as "the worst leadership in the world" during a nearly five-minute statement.

Looking back, Collier views her outspokenness as a success in amplifying player concerns. Her remarks appear to have been a catalyst for discussions surrounding Engelbert's tenure, which is set to conclude at the end of the year. Whispers about a perceived disconnect between Engelbert and star players had circulated previously, with some players noting a stronger relationship with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Collier's strong words, however, are credited by some with creating a deeper impact.

Olivia Miles reflected on Collier's speech, stating, "I really started paying attention to Phee as a trailblazer when she went into the presser that one day and had a little speech and it kind of went viral." Miles added that Collier was among the first to "kind of speak up at the time and it was really, really cool," highlighting the intentionality and impact of her actions in pushing for change.

The WNBA announced on September 4 that Engelbert would retire after seven years. During her tenure, she guided the league through the challenges of a global pandemic and was involved in negotiating two significant Collective Bargaining Agreements. Breanna Stewart acknowledged the difficulty of the role, stating, "Being commissioner of a league that is growing immensely year by year has to be a tough job but she deserves her flowers." Stewart also noted Engelbert's role in achieving the "incredible CBA" and that she "was dealt a tough hand and she continued to do really well with it."

As the league moves forward, the search for Engelbert's successor is underway, with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver initiating the process. Stewart and Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve expressed hopes that WNBA stakeholders, including players, will be involved in the selection process, emphasizing the importance of partnership.

Regarding desired qualifications for the next commissioner, Collier suggested a sports background would be beneficial. Reeve, however, emphasized the need for a leader who understands how to build relationships with all factions of the league and prioritizes how people are treated. "Communication is usually at the heart of that," Reeve said.

Reeve also stressed the importance of the next commissioner understanding the broader climate surrounding women's sports, including the need to protect athletes from online harassment. "Understanding the climate, you know, that’s big," Reeve stated, pointing to the necessity of addressing the physical and mental well-being of players. She also highlighted the ongoing challenge of capitalizing on the league's current financial momentum and planning for future growth, such as expansion beyond 2030.
