Nancy Jones, widow of country music legend George Jones, has shared reflections on their 32-year marriage, describing her role in helping him overcome addiction and her current pursuit of enjoying life.

"Right now, I'm just trying to enjoy life. I had 32 years with him and I have missed out on life and so I'm enjoying life now," Nancy Jones, 77, stated on the podcast Drifting Cowboy. She added, "I deserve it. I really do, and I pat myself on the back because I put 32 years of my life saving a man, and so that's why I'm out having a good time now."

During the early decades of his career, from the 1950s to the mid-1980s, George Jones struggled with alcohol and cocaine addiction, which led to repeated hospitalizations and numerous missed performances, earning him the nickname "No Show Jones." After three previous marriages, he married Nancy in 1983. She was instrumental in guiding him toward sobriety and a career resurgence that continued until his death in 2013 at the age of 81.

Nancy Jones described her late husband as a "good man" who became involved with a "wrong crowd." She believed her purpose was to help him, stating, "I really, in my heart, I'll always believe that's why God put me on this earth." While acknowledging divine intervention, she emphasized her active role, explaining, "God did, but I had to lead him back to God and I had to have the patience with him."

She recalled George Jones's aversion to nagging, noting that she "never nagged him." Instead, she cultivated patience, which she identified as a key to their success. Nancy Jones detailed how alcohol and cocaine altered his personality, noting that he could be a "mean drunk" and physically imposing when under the influence. "He was very abusive. I'm not going to lie," she told People magazine in relation to her 2023 memoir, "but I knew there was a good man there. I loved this man, and I knew I was fighting for a good man."

George Jones himself acknowledged Nancy's impact, stating two years before his death, "I credit Nancy for saving my life." He expressed that he likely would not have survived or maintained his career without her.

Nancy Jones met George Jones on a blind date in 1981. At the time, she was 34 and divorced, while he was 50 and facing career difficulties due to his reputation for heavy drinking and drug use. She recalled that when he was under the influence, his behavior was not indicative of the man she knew, attributing it to "demons coming out." She also mentioned that his substance abuse led to incidents such as his second wife hiding car keys, prompting him to drive a lawnmower to a liquor store.

Despite the challenges, Nancy Jones maintained her commitment. She stated, "God told me: 'If you leave him, he's going to die.' And I said: 'You know what - you're too good of a man to let go to hell, and I'm not gonna let you do it.' You have to throw every bit of love in your body to live with someone like that."
