Nancy Guthrie Kidnapping Investigation Nears 9-Month Mark; DNA Analysis Underway
Pima County Sheriff's Department reports progress in the ongoing search for Savannah Guthrie's mother, who was abducted in February.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department provided an update Friday on the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, stating that the investigation is nearing its ninth month and that the department is collaborating with the Nancy Guthrie Task Force on DNA analysis to further the case.
Earlier in October, investigators traveled to Florida to consult with laboratory scientists regarding advancements in the investigation. "A number of ideas were discussed, and we continue to work with all our partners to solve this case," the department stated in a post on X. Authorities are urging the public to report any information, emphasizing that even minor details could be crucial.
Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC journalist Savannah Guthrie, was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona, home on February 1. She was last seen on the evening of January 31, shortly before 10 p.m., after a relative dropped her off at her residence in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood.
Law enforcement has faced challenges in identifying suspects despite a masked individual appearing on Guthrie's Ring doorbell camera. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed shortly after Guthrie's disappearance that she had been taken against her will, stating, "She did not leave on her own. We know that."
In July, authorities released two ransom notes related to Guthrie's kidnapping. The first note, dated February 2, claimed Guthrie was unharmed and demanded $4 million in cryptocurrency for her release. A second note, sent on February 6, stated that Guthrie had died shortly after her abduction. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI released these notes in late July, noting their unique writing style and requesting public assistance in identifying any recognizable patterns.
Late last month, investigators announced they were made aware of a potential new ransom note. The Sheriff's Department and FBI task force were examining the information to determine its credibility. As of the latest update, investigators are continuing to pursue leads and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, the FBI, or Crime Stoppers.
