Nail Polish Choices Linked to Personality Traits, Expert Says
An expert suggests that the colors people choose for their nails can offer insights into their confidence, creativity, ambition, and even their relationship approaches.
The choice of nail polish color may offer clues to an individual's personality, according to beauty expert Jyoti Verma, founder of Mirellé Inspo. Verma suggests that instinctive color choices are rooted in neurological responses rather than conscious preference, influencing emotional states throughout the day due to constant visual exposure.
Verma explained that nail polish color psychology applies the principles of color psychology—the study of how hues influence emotions, thoughts, and behavior—to the selection of nail polish. "Nail polish sits in your field of vision all day," Verma stated. "Your hands are constantly visible to you while typing, eating, talking."
Color Interpretations
Red polish is often associated with boldness, ambition, and a comfort with being the center of attention. It signifies confidence, passion, and high energy, making it a favored choice for natural leaders who are not afraid to take risks.
Pink shades, particularly lighter tones, convey warmth, social openness, and a focus on connection, projecting approachability and friendliness. Deeper pinks like fuchsia and magenta suggest energy, decisiveness, and a playful authority.
Nude nails are described as signifying "deliberate understatement," representing a considered aesthetic choice rather than a default. This color conveys composure and self-possession, and in professional settings, it tends to be perceived as polished.
Blue nail polish is linked to calmness, emotional steadiness, and a preference for depth over display. It is often associated with trustworthiness and competence, making it suitable for professional contexts where red might be seen as too dominant. Lighter blues suggest openness, while darker shades can signal intelligence and creative confidence.
Black nails are said to indicate independence, creative confidence, and a high tolerance for ambiguity. Individuals who choose black often value psychological independence and may prioritize their own sense of appropriateness over established norms.
Multicoloured nails, also known as 'dopamine nails,' are chosen for their positive emotional response. Warm, saturated shades like hot pink, electric orange, and vivid yellow are noted for their mood-boosting qualities. These colors are often favored by individuals with energetic, creative, and outgoing personalities, reflecting a love for variety and spontaneity.
