Mystery Pilots Credited with Saving FlyDubai Flight Amidst Cockpit Attack
Two traveling crew members intervened to stabilize a Dubai-bound plane after the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain, according to a passenger's account.
Two unidentified uniformed crew members are being hailed as heroes for their swift actions in preventing a FlyDubai flight from crashing on Saturday, three days after the incident. The crew members were reportedly traveling on the plane, a practice known as deadheading, when the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain, leading to a chaotic situation in the cockpit.
One passenger, Daniel Schlichter, who was seated in the second row, provided one of the most detailed accounts of the events. He described hearing screaming passengers discover the unfolding crisis in the cockpit. According to Schlichter, the co-pilot was repeatedly attacking the captain, and blood was visible.
Schlichter recounted that after the captain, despite being wounded, managed to unlock the cockpit door, a passenger subdued the co-pilot. At that point, one of the traveling pilots quickly entered the cockpit to take control of the aircraft. The second traveling pilot then joined him, and they secured the door.
"He acted really like a hero, taking over the plane and reacted like he understood exactly what is going on, and I think we owe him our lives not less than the other heroes that went on the flight," Schlichter said of the first pilot to enter the cockpit.
Once the two pilots took control, the plane experienced a severe descent, causing part of its rudder to break away. The pilots issued a mayday call and began searching for a place to land. Schlichter admitted to feeling worried during this period, concerned about the possibility of the plane being hijacked to an unknown destination.
However, after approximately 45 minutes, the pilots announced their intention to land in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, assuring passengers that everything would be alright. The flight, carrying 182 people, eventually landed safely.
